  • 2 Tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp fine salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 1 3/4 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 1/4 cups buttermilk, room temperature
  • 2/3 cup vegetable or canola oil
  • 2 squirts of green gel food coloring
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp white vinegar
  • 1 1/2 cups unsalted butter, room temperature (for frosting)
  • 1/2 cup full-fat cream cheese, room temperature
  • 1 Tbsp vanilla extract (for frosting)
  • 1 tsp fine salt (for frosting)
  • 8 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 Tbsp heavy whipping cream

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two round 10-inch cake pans.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together cake flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, cream the butter and sugar until fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, then mix in buttermilk, oil, food coloring, vanilla extract, and vinegar.
  4. Gradually combine dry ingredients with wet ingredients until just mixed.
  5. Divide batter into prepared pans and bake for about 28 minutes. Cool in pans for 10 minutes before transferring to wire racks.
  6. For the frosting: Beat butter and cream cheese until smooth; gradually add powdered sugar and salt. Mix in heavy cream to achieve desired consistency.
  7. Assemble the cake by layering with frosting in between layers and on the outside before decorating creatively.
