Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 blood orange
  • 1 navel orange
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar (for topping)
  • 4 tsps grated orange zest
  • 1 cup fresh orange juice
  • 2 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 ½ tsps baking powder
  • 1 tsp kosher salt
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar (for batter)
  • ⅓ cup unsalted butter
  • ⅓ cup sour cream
  • 3 large eggs

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Citrus Topping: Slice both oranges thinly. In a saucepan, combine water and sugar over medium heat until dissolved. Add orange slices and simmer for about 10 minutes until tender.
  2. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9-inch round cake pan.
  3. Make the Batter: In one bowl, whisk flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar. In another, mix butter, sour cream, eggs, zest, and juice until combined. Gradually combine wet and dry ingredients.
  4. Assemble: Arrange candied orange slices in the pan and pour batter over them evenly.
  5. Bake: Bake for about 35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool in the pan for about 10 minutes before inverting onto a plate.
