Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground sausage (beef, chicken, or turkey)
  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme (or ½ teaspoon dried)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 package of puff pastry (2 sheets, thawed)
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • Optional: ½ cup grated Gruyère cheese, 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard

Instructions

  1. Caramelize the onions by heating olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add sliced onions and a pinch of salt. Cook slowly while stirring occasionally until golden brown (about 15-20 minutes). Set aside to cool.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine ground sausage with caramelized onions. Add thyme, salt, and pepper; mix thoroughly. Optionally stir in cheese and mustard.
  3. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  4. Roll out puff pastry on a floured surface until smooth. Cut into rectangles measuring approximately 4×6 inches. Place a spoonful of filling on each rectangle, fold over the pastry, seal edges with a fork, and brush tops with beaten egg.
  5. Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown. Allow to cool slightly before serving.
