  • 1 cup Buttermilk (room temperature)
  • 1 cup Hot coffee
  • 1/2 cup Canola oil
  • 2 tsp Vanilla extract
  • 2 cups Fresh blackberries
  • 2 tbsp White granulated sugar
  • 1 tbsp Fresh lemon juice
  • 1 tsp Lemon zest
  • 1 Cinnamon stick
  • 1/4 cup Water
  • 1 tbsp Cornstarch
  • 8 oz Cream cheese (softened)
  • 1/2 cup Unsalted butter (softened)
  • 3 cups Powdered sugar (sifted)
  • 1/4 tsp Salt
  • 1 tsp Vanilla extract
  • Chocolate skulls
  • Fresh blackberries
  • Dried rose petals

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In one bowl, whisk together the dry ingredients: sifted flour, black cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, mix the wet ingredients: sugar, eggs, buttermilk, hot coffee, canola oil, and vanilla until well combined.
  4. Gradually add the dry mixture to the wet mixture using an electric mixer on low speed until just combined.
  5. Divide the batter between the prepared pans and bake for about 30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Allow cooling before removing from pans.
  6. Prepare the blackberry compote by cooking fresh blackberries with sugar, lemon juice, zest, cinnamon stick, and water over medium heat until soft. Thicken with cornstarch mixed with water.
  7. For the frosting, beat cream cheese and butter together before adding powdered sugar and black cocoa powder until smooth.
  8. Assemble by layering cake with blackberry compote and frosting; decorate as desired.
